Published on

You don’t have to be rich to follow a low-carb lifestyle — many people possibly associate the Keto diet on a budget. The budget part is usually considered as a downside of practising a ketogenic diet.

Is It Possible To Maintain Keto Diet On A Budget?

Keto is a diet which involves low carb, high fat and moderate protein foods. It has been successful instant results for weight loss as a health trend going all around the world.

I have certainly gone through good times financially as well as lean times, and I truly feel that the Keto diet can be adapted to all budgets. If you plan everything ahead, you can not only keep your meals and required portions on track but also prevent unnecessary spending and impulsive purchases.

Yes, if you pay attention, the Keto diet can be useful for your health and still suitable for your budget. Here are 5 tips:

1. Don’t Pay Extra For Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts

Keto Chicken Breast Skin On For A Budget

Since you want the fat, you are going to want the skin on your chicken. If you put some good spices on them and cook them until it gets crispy, the chicken skin is delicious. I call it chicken bacon.  So not only is it less expensive with the skin on, it more Keto friendly and delicious!

Don’t forget that you can also use the bones to make bone broth, which is a fantastic, and full of proper nutrition.

Premade bone broth is expensive.  You can make your own by just boiling bones and adding some salt instead of throwing them away.

2. Buy Poultry/Meat In Bulk And Freeze It

I’m sure that you have seen those packs of meat – 50 chicken wings or the whole chicken, and they cost really cheap with a large quantity.  You might think, “it’s only for the party full of people ”. Actually, it can be only for you if you like saving money.

You don’t have to eat them all for dinner in one night though.  Get yourself some zip-lock bags, and divide into meal size amounts, and throw those in the freezer, and then you have a quick easy and different ketogenic meal plan when you need it.

You can also do this with all of those huge packages of everything from ground beef and bacon to brats, corned beef and pork chops.

For example, there are so many incredible things I can do with ground beef such as casseroles, keto tacos and salads, crack slaw, chilis, hamburger soup. I could eat ground beef every day!

3. Get Affordable Alternatives

In every food category, you will get to find 2 versions of products, including an expensive and under-priced. As you go for the affordable alternative instead of the expensive one, you will be able to save quite an amount of money. But it doesn’t mean that you need to compromise on the taste and nutritional value.

  • Eggs: Remember eggs are a great budget keto food and perfect for getting you back into ketosis.
  • Vegetables: The frozen vegetables are always cheaper and have a longer shelf life
  • Cheese: Go for regular cheese and prefer cheese in one piece (not shredded) and grate it yourself.
  • Butter: I will take my chances with no name butter on sale as long as it has no other ingredients besides cream and salts.
  • Mayonnaise: You can make your own.
  • Oil: Olive oil is the cheapest healthful fat you can get.
  • Fish: You can opt for canned fish when following a keto diet, but only for a limited time.

4. Shop In Season For The Best Produce

Not only is produce cheaper when it is in the season it is also better.  Some veggies, like lettuce and tomatoes, don’t really have a season. In contrast, other types of veggies will always be lower priced in season.

Your Keto recipes need to include high-quality veggies. If you have never gone to local farm markets, do it! You can buy in-season produce directly from the farm. And if you have kids, please take them along!  It is so good for them to see where food actually comes from, and talk to the people that are growing the food you eat.

5. Meal Prep – Cook At Home To Stay Keto Budget Friendly And For Best Diet Results

Create a ketogenic meal plan, prepare your food in advance, at home. And take your own lunches to work or some snacks to the gym. It’s very simple. Dining out can be expensive (even more if you are restricted by keto choices). Cooking at home gives you the freedom to go as simple as you like it.

Simpler meal means cleaner, cheaper and faster meal. It’s essential to keep non-starchy veggies, good protein, and plenty of healthy fats.
